To which meeting may I go and what are they about?
Any person can attend a Council meeting or other specific committee meeting which is open to the public by operation of the law. Enquiries can be directed to the departmental contact person reflected on the website.
The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has been constituted in terms of the Local Government Municipal Structures Act, 117/ 1998, as a Category A Municipality with a Mayoral Executive System which allows for the exercise of executive authority through an Executive Mayor in whom the executive leadership of the Municipality is vested and who is assisted by a Mayoral Committee. The Municipal Council comprises of 175 Councillors, of which 88 Councillors represent the 88 Municipal Wards and 87 Councillors are elected as proportional representatives. The Council meets once a month. A Mayoral Committee, with the Executive Mayor as the chairperson and 10 Councillors who are chairpersons of portfolio committees, has delegated powers and meets twice a month.
What benefit will I as a resident have to attend a meeting?
You may not take part in the meeting, but you will have insight in how and what decisions are made that effect the running of the Municipality.
